Richard Wagner, The Ride of the Valkyries
Fausto Solci, 8 Variations on La Follia
Transcribing Richard Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries for two cellos was quite a challenge. The idea came to me while I was performing it in an orchestra. I wondered if such a massive orchestral force could be arranged for just two cellos. I tried to maintain the essence of thepiece, and the enthusiasm I felt both while writing it and performing it in public has led me to believe I succeeded. Before sending it to print, I had the opportunity to perform it publicly several times, and the positive feedback led to this current publication.
In a cello duo concert a few years ago, I was asked to play variations on the theme La Follia. Having found no original piece for this instrumentation, I decided to write them myself. There are clear references to Corelli, Vivaldi, and Paganini, though without any pretense of placing myself on their level. The desire here is not to be philologically accurate, but rather to demonstrate the technical and expressive possibilities of the cello duo.
I hope that those who play these pieces feel the same enthusiasm that my colleagues and I experienced while performing them.
Fausto Solci
Duets for Cello, volume 1 (Musiche per ensemble n. 2) - Fausto Solci
Following his studies at the Piacenza Conservatory under M. Scano, the Stauffer Academy in Cremona with R. Filippini, and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena with M. Maisky and G. Garbarino, Fausto Solci embarked on an intensive career. This has led him to perform with prestigious orchestras such as the RAI National Symphony Orchestra of Torino, the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento, the Carlo Felice Opera Orchestra of Genoa, the Toscanini Symphony Orchestra of Emilia-Romagna, and the Giuseppe Verdi Symphony Orchestra of Milan.
His repertoire spans from early music on period instruments to contemporary works, performing at major Italian and international festivals including the Ravenna Festival, Wratislavia Cantans, the Merano Festival, and the Stresa Festival. He is a member of the Bazzini Quartet, with whom he recorded the complete string quartets of the Brescia-born composer. He has also made numerous recordings with various ensembles for labels such as Tactus, Amadeus, Sony, and Da Vinci Classics.
Alongside his concert career, he maintains an active teaching schedule (currently at the J. Tomadini Conservatory in Udine and the V. Bellini Conservatory in Catania) and leads international masterclasses in countries such as China and Russia (including the Bashmet Festival in Sochi and the Russia Cello Academy in Moscow).
